The Liberty Basic Newsletter - Issue #19 - Oct 98
"The only stupid question is the one you don't ask"!

In this issue:

1) Managing your Email

Are you inundated with email? Can't sift through the crap to find the
good stuff? That's probably because you haven't sorted out how to
manage your incoming mail.

OK - if you are getting this - and don't want it - its SPAM - there is
no other word for it. At the bottom of this email is the unsubscribe

details. They are EASY! But if you can't follow these simple
instructions - PLEASE - just email me at:

    brosco@orac.net.au

And please - DO email ME. Sending an Unsubscribe request to the group
is also SPAM - so please - don't do it! Just contact me - I'll fix
it!

***** Please Note: *****
Alyce has tested out the 'Digest' option that's available with the
email list. She found that it took several attempts to be able to
log in. I don't know what's causing the problem - I have written to

the email service providers about it. This also explains why some
people have been unable to unsubscribe.

So if you are having troubles unsubscribing - or in trying to change
your options - please contact me directly to fix it for you.

Now for the people who do want this:

                         Managing Your Email

Sorry for the long intro - but having been beaten over the head for
trying to help people for FREE - I am now very sensitive about anything

that I post. On to the good stuff!!!!

I use an Email reader called Eudora Lite. It is 100% FREE - my
favourite price! OK - they have a PRO version that they sell - but the
Lite
version that I use does every thing that I need to manage the large
volume of email that I receive every day. I receive around 100 emails
every day. On my busy days - to read more than 10 or 15 is out of the
question - so what do I do?

With Eudora - all incoming mail is 'read' and immediately placed in a

mailbox of my choice. The selection is simple - it is based on text
within:

'sender','reply to', subject, etc.

And this happens AUTOMATICALLY!!!!!

I have several mailboxes. The first that I look at is mail from Alyce,
yep - she has her own special mailbox - we work together so much - plus
I have so much respect for her - I want to make sure that I don't miss
anything that she posts. The next mailbox I look at is 'LBNews' - well
having encouraged people to use this, it would be very bad form if I

didn't support it. Next is the LB Email list, etc. etc.

The way it works - when ever I log on - my email reader (Eudora) starts
up - it downloads all emails from my ISP and places them in the
appropriate mailbox. I can view them while I'm online or after I
Logoff. I can reply - and if I'm offline at the time - it just sends
my response next time that I logon.

While the email is downloading I usually start up my browser - first
port of call - The LBNetwork Message Board. So within a few minutes

of logging on I gave collected all the postings of all the LBers - and
filed them into an appropriate location.

Volume of incoming mail has NEVER caused me a problem. I read the
most important stuff - gradually working to the least important - when
I run out of time - I just stop reading. The rest is still there
for me to read later. And I don't need to log back on to get it - its
sitting there waiting for me. And thats another point - Eudora marks
very clearly - Unread message, read message, messaged that have been

replied to and messages with attachments. The attachments are also
stored in a directory of there own. Its all just TOO easy.

BTW - I also have a mailbox that is for LBers. Every message that is
sent to me about LB, the sender's email address gets put into the
'filter' so that mail goes to the 'LBers Mailbox'. That places you
high in the priority of messages to be read ( Just slightly lower than
Alyce and LbNews).

If you need more information on how to set up Eudora for your

needs - please contact me directly.

You can download a free copy of Eudora from:

      http://www.eudora.com

Its also on many of the CDROMS that you find on the cover of PC
magazines.

I would truly recommend this product to anybody.

Not Quite a Newsletter - October 26, 1998

Hi everyone. As you might have guessed by now, Brosco is
out of town for a short time. I believe he plans to be

back by the end of the week. We do, indeed, have several
newsletters in the works, so you can look forward to
receiving one fairly soon. Submissions, as always are
very welcome!

I'd like to paraphrase part of a message I received recently
from Michael Rankin, whose wit and intelligence I admire
greatly. Michael says that......

Knowledge is a gift that we receive from others.

Well said, Michael! I agree whole-heartedly. I would like to
direct everyone to Michael's excellent LB website, containing

some of the most useful routines for LB that one could find.
By the way, Michael, the joke at the top about the size of your
archive is no longer valid! Visit Another Liberty BASIC Page at:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Vista/6713/index.html

Many others have given us the gift of knowledge at their
websites. Among them:

Doyle Whisenant has put up a new site. What a lot of work, Doyle!
This is THE place to go for information on calls to the win31 API

and for add-on DLL's that have been made to work in LB. If you
haven't beem there yet, why not visit soon? Mekanixx WorkShop:

http://mechanic.webjump.com

Tom Record is also getting a website together. He has made the
Win31 Software Developer's Kit helpfile available, at least
temporarily. It is a large download - over 2 Megs, but well
worth it. It contains documentation for all calls to the Win31
API, in C syntax. Although some of the language appears to be

arcane and mystical, some of the explanations are very
informative. I have used this quite a bit, since downloading
it a week ago. Thanks Tom. win31sdk helpfile:

Dave Szafranski has the most amazing graphics routines available
on his site! If you haven't checked these out, you are in for
a real treat! Dave's code is extremely well-written and his ideas
are very clever. Visit Graphic Tools!:

http://www.liberty-basic.com/free/graphictools/

Actually, there are many really fine websites which now promote
Liberty BASIC. The links are listed on the grand-daddy of all
LB sites, Liberty BASIC Network. Many, many thanks to Garrett
and Michael for providing this excellent resource! Visit LBN and
surf all of the great links:

http://www.liberty-basic.com/

There is one last source of knowledge that I would like to
point out. It is LB's own helpfile. Some of us have been
discussing this recently, and we all agree that it is a

fantastic resource that is too often overlooked!
We all find that we have the helpfile open whenever we
are writing code and use it constantly. Thanks, Carl!

Again, thanks to EVERYONE who gives the gift of knowledge to us
all. This not only includes those who maintain websites, but
those who answer questions on the message board and mail
lists, and those who send private messages of support and
goodwill to others. I try to show my appreciation to each

person from whom I have learned. (Whew...that's a lot of
people!) In so doing, I have made many wonderful friends in
this community of kind and giving people. If even one person
who reads this will write an email to someone whose code,
tutorial, website, or answer to a question has helped him/her,
I will be very happy, indeed.

Best Wishes to All,
Alyce
